For Color Girls

OMG, it’s been forever since I have written a blog but off the heels of two, a movie and a book, I was forced to write a blog and maybe post it as a note on Facebook.

Sometimes I surprise people when I say I’ve read a certain book, saw a certain movie/play, or can recite a line from a poem, rap, or even a quote delivered in a speech that I have heard only once. Well I had that same look of surprise when the announcement came that a new movie, “For Color Girls” would be hitting theaters and I said I read the collection of poems in high school and I also saw the play (off Broadway of course because I was too young for that). And almost as a challenge these older women would question me about the play, ask how could I understand such depth at such a young age. Now you know it wasn’t in those exact words but nonetheless it was still implied in a manner that would belittle most people who hold a bit of intellect.

Anywoo, these poems I couldn’t recite to you but I can tell you the impact that the play had on me was of one that anyone in world could relate despite race and age. It is a story dedicated to BLACK women, but a story that crosses the boundary that is often set by color. It is coming of age, a story of the value of self worth, and story of encouragement. It is pretty much a story of what you would want it to be, a story that you can see friend, your sister, auntie, grandmother, cousin, mother, or even YOURSELF!

“For color girls who have considered suicide/When the rainbow is enuf” by Ntozake Shange is one of the most creative pieces of work that has been bought to the big screen. The original work start with seven women represented by seven different colors; lady in brown, lady in red, lady, in blue, lady in purple, lady in yellow, lady in orange, and the lady in green. With each woman to represent a different city(I can’t recall the cities) but in the movie had made a few changes. Changes that were not bad; changes that have given the movie an update from the 70’s and bought light issues of our time.

For years I’ve been hearing that India. Arie would be working on a production that would bring this play back to Broadway but NOTHING! Then, I kept hearing that Tyler Perry was to bring it to life once again but on a big screen, YEAH RIGHT I know he is going to mess this up with a million changes! This is one movie that I will not be going to see, as I’m not a fan of his work. But then I saw the trailer, the cast of characters, and after seeing all the post and reviews my Facebook friends posted well I just had to go see what all the hype was and I’m glad I did. The changes were little, if fact they were so little you wouldn’t even notice it. The women were given names, and the men were given faces, instead of acknowledging the Vietnam War we are acknowledging the War on Iraq and pushing the envelope addressing HIV/AIDS, that’s just how little the changes were. Well with the exception the colors were flip around and some poems told by others that were not represented of the color for the play. Again, it’s a story that could be told from any women so who really cares if the colors were switched right? I don’t because it was still great and fit each situation and still had the same meaning! Each setting for each poem was delivered with such force, such gripping magnitude that you allowed you to feel the pain of each person as they delivered line after line and if that were not enough a full visual of what was going on in the mind of each women at each time was mesmerizing.

The Cast was awesome! I mean you can not go wrong with Kimberly Elise-lady in brown(Crystal), Anika Noni Rose-lady in yellow, Janet Jackson-lady in red(Jo). Kerry Washingtion-lady in blue, Thandie Newton-lady in orange (Tangie), Tessa Thompson-lady in purple(Nyla), Whoopi Goldberg-lady in white(mother of Nyla &Tangie), Phylicia Rashad, Macy Gray, Lorette Devine-lady in green, Macy Gray, Michael Ealy, Hill Harper, Khalil Kain, and the guy that played Michael Jackson’s father in that movie. For the most part I can not remember all the names as they appeared in the movie but I know most of them from other bodies of work and for those that I have left out it’s because I don’t remember their names at all but did a great job in their rolls. Macy Gray was only seen for maybe five minutes of the movie but you will never forget her voice, the look, or the words she spoke of what she use to be like as a women of and in the world world, and how now 6 blocks of Harlem is her universe! The lady in white, as I recall was not an original color in the book, but was just as important bring everything full circle. There is something about the character portrayed by Phylicia Rashad that embodied all of the women in one that I cannot put my finger on.

So all in all I give the movie two thumbs up. I give Tyler Perry two thumbs and a four star rating for his directing, production, and his ability to write the screenplay for this wonderful piece! It makes me want to purchase the book for my very own keepsake.

Feeling A Bit Domestic: Jamaican Curry Chicken

Last Friday I woke up wanting curry chicken, needless to say I did not get any. Saturday morning I woke up and said “That’s it, I will make curry for Sunday dinner!” Saturday evening me and the fam headed out to buy decorations for my auntie birthday and I picked up a few things to make the curry idea come to life.

Now, I must admit I’m no chef, don’t claim to be one, and for the life of me will never attend culinary school because I actually don’t think I have that type of talent. However, once in a while I feel like being domestic and fortunately I have wonderful family and friends that will let me experiment on them when I get these cravings.

Things You Will Need:

3-4 pounds of chicken (whole and cut up, I like the bones skinless chicken breast cut into bite size pieces)

1 small lemon

1 small lime

3 large garlic cloves

1 small onion or 2 green onions minced

¼ inch of ginger peeled and finely minced (ginger power will do just fine)

1 ½ tablespoon curry powder

1 teaspoon sugar

2 teaspoons of salt

2 tablespoons of olive oil (vegetable oil is fine)

2 cups of water

3-4 potatoes washed and cubed

*1 habanero pepper (only if you want a spicy dish)
*For a creamy or sweeter Indian/Thai taste you can add coconut milk instead of the water (I didn’t this time, because I wanted to try this; however, I love the texture and taste it gives)

1. Cut chicken into bite size pieces. If using a whole chicken cut into 1 ½ to 2 inch serving pieces. Squeeze the juice of the lemon and lime into a large bowl of water; wash the chicken pieces in the water and drain.

2. In a small bowl or large freezer bag mix the garlic, onions, and ginger; allow flavors to blend for 30 minutes or longer.

3. Mix curry powder, sugar, and salt. Rub spice mixture and garlic/onion mixture into the chicken. Place in a glass bowl; cover and allow to marinate for 1 hour or longer.

4. In a large skillet, brown chicken in hot oil over medium-high heat; until chicken “juice” runs clear. Add the water and potatoes. As soon as the liquid begins to boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer until chicken is cooked; 20-30 minutes. *if you are using the habanero pepper this is the time you will add the UNCUT pepper* Chicken should be tender and again juices should run clear.

5. Serves chicken over a bed of fluffy rice and broccoli…I use Jasmine rice with a bit of the lime peel for flavor and scent*

Enjoy and please let me know how this has turned out for you!

This recipe was given to i take no credit for the ingredients or measurements use!

*I made this dish twice and both times it was GREAT! I will continue to use this one*

Yesterday I read an article about a former co-worker who is looking to face 10 years in prison for stealing $165,000 of government funds. Today while at work one of my fav songs "Flashing Lights" by Kanye West then "Hollywood" by Jay-Z, about an hour later "90210" from Wale's debut album Attention Deficit played on the iPod. Now, for some reason this song really caught my attention and not because of the article but because of the lyrics and how some of us would like to Keep Up With The Kardashins but not with our finances.

If you are not a fan of these artist you might ask your self what do these songs have in common with Hollywood? And I will tell you EVERYTHING! You see today we live in the world of Reality TV, when in fact reality TV is the fakest world of all; its not real! Some of us want to live this "90210" life, but can't afford the shirt on our backs. Some of us do "anything for everything" and don't see the harm in it. We don't care about the bridges we burn or how we torture our bodies to live up to the images we are blinded by. We know longer believe in "shooting stars but in shoes and cars", we all aim to be something great in life but some; well let's just say they aim for status that they will never achieve. *oooooh it's the lights*

You see I have friends and family that like to walk around in $100+ jeans, shoes, and handbag...and yes I can admit I'm one of those girls to some extent, but not were it effects my health or finances and not to the point were I want to steal and risk my freedom! I have friends and family that use metro as there only mode of transportation and want Giuseppe Zanotti and Christian Louboutin shoes. They want their partner to drive Beamers and they shouldn't spit out their mouth and shoes they shouldn't be walking in if they don't have the means to have them. I have friends and family who miss meals, not because they can't afford to eat everyday but because they don't want to gain weight or they would prefer to drink their calories not realizing that while she can get in a size 24 and look good on the outside her body is screaming for help on the inside. Learn to keep up with yourself and not the celebs!*blinded by the actions*

So bottom line it's okay to rock the designer labels, it's also okay to rock the Target and Wal-Mart labels as well but remember you must be able to afford them. Most of the hottest celebrities don't pay for shoes, bags, or outfits we crave, they are gifted to them. Control your funds, have your check broke down into threes....BILLS, SAVINGS, AND TAKE HOME PAY. With your take home pay do what you feel. I'm not sitting here on a high horse or anything and I'm a firm believer of getting what you like and want as long as you don't have to sell your soul to get it. Remember that reality TV is not real, it's a mirage! So to all those who live in the world of MTV & BET it's time to wake up and stop living in a dream. You're a regular girl with celebrity dreams but you don't have to end up like the girl in the song. Real talk we all know someone that has lived the life of all three songs; it could end well with you on top or you can be eaten alive in find yourself at the bottom.

Looking Fly While Giving Back

Okay you guys back in early February I heard that the hottest Tees would be launched during Fashion Week in New York for the charity FFAWN+CATHERINE MALANDRINO. FFAWN is a charity founded by MJB in 2008 and includes the designer Catherine Malandrino as one of the Board of Directors. FFAWN; Foundation For the Achievement of Women Now is to help women gain confidence and skills to reach their full potential by helping the young, single mothers enhance their parenting skills, obtain educational and vocational support and to lead healthy, happy and productive lives.*taken from their mission statement*

Anyway, at that time I put out a message to my cousin to head over to Bloomies on 17 February to pick up my shirt when MJB & Catherine Malandrino make a personal appearance. Needless to say my cousin never made it that day and I just shut my mouth because I knew I would never make it to NYC with a boot on my foot and all the snow that was on the grown; however, she finally make it to Bloomingdales to pick up the shirts (I wanted more that 1) but was only to get one of my requested 3.

It’s here! It’s here! So now I’m all excited ripped open the package took my shirt out and tried it’s a medium, yet still to big and to long, okay I will belt it, ummm no not cute because of the print, so now what am I going to do?

Soooooo I have this shirt that I had to pay $50.00(the cost of the tee is only 39 but I had to pay for shipping)yet I can’t wear it. My question is should I get it altered or just keep it and know my money went to a great cause?

BTW: The tee that I have is the one pictured on M.J.B.

FFAWN has many ways that you can support the cost such as donating money or by purchasing products that give a portion of the proceeds to the organization such as Gucci, Carol’s Daughter, or the new FFAWN Walk With Oprah.

The Real World.....OF DATING THAT IS!

Okay I have been told that I'm intimidating, mean, but most recently UNREALISTIC, but yet I'm a "good woman"! Really me?! I honestly don't see that so I became a bit defensive, thinking WHAT IS UNREALISTIC ABOUT WHAT I WANT/NEED FROM A RELATIONSHIP? So, I quickly chopped him up as not knowing what he is talking about and had him to explain what exactly was unrealistic about my wants.

Below are the characteristics I would love my partner to have:

Reliability/Dependability (these are interchangeable depending on who uses them, but they are very much the same:-)
No Kids ( I can bend on this as long as you don't have 50 baby mommas and you still freaking them all to avoid paying child support or just like to play emotional are a loser and need to grow up, wrap it up, and get a HIV Test).

I have truly become fond of this dude because of his willingness to be truthful, from his view of course, no matter how much backlash he receives in our conversations. With that said, he told me that 3 out of the 5 goals are possible but I will need to learn to live without having all 5 because at least one will lack one of those requirements. I don't understand that, I really don’t! It's not like I'm asking for an arm, leg, or blood platelets just the 5 things that I know I bring to the table and everything else is a bonus!

Reliability/Dependability-you won't always get because something will distract them and it could be as simple a basketball game that will get you upset when they don't do exactly what you need at that time but they are always there when you are really in need. He raps it up with "but y'all forget all about the needs and rely on the wants"

Trustfulness (Honesty)- you can trust him but as soon as he tells you one lie to prevent from hurting your feelings again that's all you can think of. He said "If I say I don't like your shoes, they make your ankles look fat. You get mad." Okay I had to laugh at that one because some things should just be kept to yourself...but he went on and said that a guy can say "baby I love you, I'm not cheating on you, you are the only one for me. You still won't believe him, but if one of your girls lie and say they saw him at the club with Lisa you would believe the friend and not your man. Why?"

Career & Goals he agreed with...I couldn't believe it!

Kids- he believes it's hard to find someone our age without kids, so I need to give on that one. But if I find one with a "50" I need to look elsewhere because we shouldn't have kids after the age of 30....I guess I'm out of the baby making game since I hit that mark already.

As the conversation got deeper he had me second guessing myself and the things that I want out of a partner, but now I know it's possible to find that someone, I just may have started a bit to late on this journey and because of that he told me I may need to brighten my horizons and look outside the box in his opinion...THAT'S ANOTHER BLOG AND CONVERSATION ALL TOGETHER BUT I'M NOT TOTALLY AGIANST IT ANYMORE!

Jay-Z Apart of The Illuminati: Get A Life People

Hey people this is a long one but I am getting tried of all the e-mails I received from some friends about Jay-Z and Em’ being devil worshippers, so this is just my way of venting and showing you guys that I really do know a little something about something other than being silly or talking about the worthless stuff on my other blog.

As you all know, I’m a huge fan of Jay-Z but all of this talk about him being involved in the Freemasonry and Illuminati sparked a little interest about the whole thing. I mean I remember when it was Prince, then 2Pac, and now Kanye, Jigga, Beyonce, and Rihanna and I believe Prodigy started this whole thing. So here are my thoughts about the whole thing!

If you have not heard it from the mouths of these people about their beliefs, it’s not your place to judge. If you choose to cease listening to music, that’s your right but please stop with all of these conspiracy theories it’s becoming a bit mundane and ridiculous! I will be the first to say that some gossip sparks great conversation (I have a whole blog dedicated to just that) and peeks interest to a “stalkish” level but lets get real we don’t really know what these people do, what they believe in, or what they will be held accountable for. So here are my thoughts about the whole Illuminati thing.

Lets begin with the infamous sign that Jay throws up…THE ROC, THE DIAMOND, or whatever you would choose to call it. It’s found on every dollar you have, if you don’t believe me pull it out of your pocket or wallet… It’s call “The Eye of Providence” or the “Great Seal” which has been translated from Latin by the State Department as “HE (GOD) HAS FAVORED OUR UNDERTAKINGS” and actually comes from a story of some sort.

Now look back to where all of those artists came from…Brooklyn, Chicago, Barbados, and Houston. Some of low class and some middle class, but never having money as they have right now. Jay-Z and Rihanna coming from no to little money at all, Kanye, whose mother was a college professor but also a single mother taking care of her only son…which means everything fell on her shoulders and as far as education it would have been provided to him free at the university of which his mother taught! Beyonce, from what we have read and watched on TV about how she grew up went from having a mother that owned a hair salon and a father who worked for Corporate America and quite to support his children (because I believe Kelly is his child) dreams of becoming stars. They gave up their lifestyle and went to having a one-income middle class home.

The handshake which he is seen doing with all of his friends, people he meet, and in the Roc Boy video…I have never once seen a handshake by the mason so I wouldn’t know what the hand shake look like but on the real I have met many a black folk..yeah I said many of black folk, do some weird handshakes that is not considered traditional but I guess giving dap, high fives, or when those of another color making fun of the handshakes that are done are considered normal and have know known connotations.

The look of the above mention, they all appear to be dark, they only wear black. Well guess what most of what I wear is black and you know what else I love a BLACK Smokey Eye when I go lease when I can get it right. And I have seen all the women in bright colors looking all so alive in public and in the pictures that the paparazzi takes and truth be told I love to see Beyonce in anything other than a freaking leotard and I just wish Rihanna could give a performance that don’t bore me to death. I want Kanye to stop acting an azz at public events no matter how funny it may be or even if he is speaking the truth, I also want him to go back to blogging because I miss the all caps blog. I want Jay to send me tickets to all his performances in D.M.V. and at least one at the Garden.

All of this to me is a joke, I’m a fan or should I say a supporter of all them…even Beyonce at times! So while this is the subject for the moment, next week, month, or year it will be another next week, month, or year. Let us worry about what is going in the world today that will actually affect our future! Let us worry about those in Haiti, how the death toll has now reached 150,000. How many people did not know that Guatemala, Venezuela and Argentina had earthquakes one week after Haiti? Let us worry about how here in the US we are known to be the most insensitive people in the world, that African-American women in my hometown of DC have the highest death rate from HIV/AIDS and how African-Americans Men are dying from prostate cancer because they refuse to get annual check-ups. I can go on and on so let us worry about real issues that we know to be the truth but refuse to talk about.

In addition, before anyone tell me to listen to D’evils, Lucifer, Run This Town or whatever else I own the cds…I rock them in my car and iPod and will rap the lyrics for ya! If one person tell me to look at them place the diamond over there eye I’m going to say guess what I need it to pay my bills and get what I want and need just like everyone else. If you want to get rid of yours please pass it on to me because I have student loans from the past, would love to donate more than my $30.00 to Haiti, and buy a new Mac before my laptop blows up on me.

I personally think the new video is whack and boring and all the signs presented are done deliberately for those who are talking about this once again; it’s not for me to decided if this is true or false it’s all just gossip. So in the words of Jay-Z “I’M OFF THAT” and educating our people about something of value “I’M ON THAT!”
